"Investing in companies led by young founders"

The 1517 Community is an environment for young entrepreneurs, scientists, and bright-minds to come together in mutual-support of one another, to learn, grow, and empower each other. It's a community founded by the VC firm known as the 1517 Fund, which supports teams with grant, pre-seed, and seed funding for technology startups. Their focus is on makers, hackers, and scientists interested in working outside tracked institutions because they believe that the path geared towards higher education is not for all. They motivate people to work on what they’re passionate about, to learn by doing, and to create new technologies.

They’re founded by an experienced team that mostly came from the Thiel Fellowship/Foundation and primarily support young founders. Their investing thesis is called The New 95 and is based on Martin Luther’s 95 Theses which was nailed on the door of the Catholic Church during the time of the Reformation.

This event will bring together members of the 1517 community here in Toronto and those who are interested in learning more about the fund as well as its community members. It is an invite-only event for investors, innovators, inventors, and those with ingenuity. The 1517 Community - Toronto Kickoff event will be the first of a series of get-togethers to bring about intimate community-building amongst its members as well create room for synergy-building with the greater entrepreneurial ecosystem of Toronto.
