It’s officially been half a year since Toronto went into lockdown and a significant portion of the workforce started their work-from-home journey. While working from home was considered a luxury not too long ago, nowadays it’s the other way around. If you’ve been feeling unmotivated, unproductive, exhausted, and lonely as of late, keep reading to find out how to break out of your slump and get back on track.
Replicate Your Commute
As annoying as the commute to work could sometimes be, especially on the TTC, it was an essential part of our routine that provided a sense of normalcy. To regain some semblance of control when so much of our lives feel out of control, try to replicate your commute. Whether this means going on a few walks a day or listening to your favourite podcast while reading the news, these practices will help you normalize what’s going on even though your routine is all out of whack.
Move Your Workspace to Another Room
After six months of looking at the same setup day in and day out, you’re probably well and truly sick of your workspace. Doing something as simple as moving your workspace to another room can help you mentally reset and get you out of your motivational slump. Let’s face it - we could all use a bit of novelty in our lives.
Try Time Blocking
If you’re starting to feel like you’re treading water and pushing things to the last minute more and more as time goes on, it may be time to try time blocking. Time blocking is a time management method that entails dedicating certain blocks during the day to one specific task. It works especially well for tasks like emails, which can be a major source of distraction throughout the workday.
Give Yourself Permission to Do You
We’ve all been bombarded with posts telling us what we should be doing during this pandemic. While doing something “great and productive and new” sounds promising, the fact of the matter is that most of us are just trying to do our best. Give yourself permission to do less or more than you usually would do. Whatever you can manage is A-ok.
