Startup Open House 2016

Neil Martin

Startup Open House is back!

From 3-8pm on Thursday, September 22nd startups across Toronto will open their doors to welcome entrepreneurs, job seekers, and those curious to get an inside look at the world of startups. The event will be happening simultaneously in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Waterloo, and we're excited that Project Spaces will be participating for the third year in a row!

Visitors will have the opportunity to visit both our Camden Street and newly expanded King West locations (you can read more about our recent expansion here). Each space has its own unique vibe and community of hardworking entrepreneurs to mix and mingle with. Oh, and ice cold beer on us.

Here's a video from a past year. As you can tell, I was pretty stoked about the whole thing.

Each year the event gets bigger and better, and is always a great reason to bring the local community together. One of our favourite mantras is "stop networking, start making friends" and events like this are a great way to do that. But aside from promoting good times, there's another reason we love participating in Startup Open House that resonates strongly with our team.

And that's authenticity.

One of our company's core values, authenticity is at the heart of everything we do and something we believe there can never be too much of. With over 1,600 members through our doors since 2011, we've kind of seen it all. People start companies for lots of reasons, and those companies can succeed or fail for lots of reasons. But something that's always present in successful founders is a real sense of authenticity. True grit, you might say.

Authenticity is about doing something because you love it, not because it's trendy. Authenticity is about knowing your market and not believing your own hype. It's about focusing on customers more than investors. It's about doing whatever it takes, working your ass off and bouncing back time and time again. It's about being good to your team. Authenticity is about understanding that there are no easy roads to success. It's about celebrating your wins, but also owning your losses.

Authenticity is about making sales before making t-shirts, and not wasting money on launch parties. Trust me, I speak from experience...

But in the world of startups it's sometimes easy for a new founder to get lost in a sea of jargon and success stories that can get you off track and keep you focused on the wrong things. That's because people end up spending more time reading startup news and watching The Social Network than they spend hanging out with startups.

That's why, by pulling back the curtain and giving people an honest look at what goes on at a startup, Startup Open House helps promote authenticity in a way few other things can.

So join us on September 22nd as we celebrate our city, our community and do our best to be the most authentic entrepreneurs we can be. Over beers, obviously.

Follow the event on Facebook where we'll be announcing our startups, and register for a chance to win a FREE week of membership.

See you there!
