The phrase, “It’s about who you know,” is becoming increasingly applicable to self-starters, hustlers and digital nomads on the come-up.
It’s not easy to succeed without a team of like-minded individuals backing you up. The idea of networking can be intimidating, but it’s human nature to want to help others, so don’t be shy!
Coworking spaces create an environment for creators, designers, influencers and founders from diverse backgrounds to motivate each other and thrive. Here are some tips to help you effortlessly gain connections at a coworking space and grow your business:
Be Open
Don’t assume that just because someone works in a different industry, that they won’t want to connect with you. Entrepreneurs often have similar experiences and face similar challenges no matter what field of business they’re in. Be open-minded because you never know where you’ll find a mentor or business partner.
Listen
Active listening is an extremely important skill when it comes to networking. Smiling, making eye contact and being genuinely interested while conversating goes a long way.
Additionally, we’re not necessarily suggesting eavesdropping, but be sure to always pay attention to your surroundings. You may work more effectively with headphones on, but try to unplug every once and awhile. People have a way of providing valuable advice when you least expect it.
Always Have Business Cards
There’s a reason that scene in American Psycho is so iconic. Although you don’t have to stress that much about the design, it’s important to always have business cards or other branded materials on you. We live in a busy world where it’s easy to forget names and faces. There are several different types of memberships at Project Spaces so a potential collaborator may only be visiting for a day. Make sure there are no missed connections by exchanging business cards.
Follow Up
Once you’ve initially met, follow-up with an e-mail or LinkedIn message to keep yourself top of mind. Include a unique detail of your conversation to really help them remember you. Keep this reminder clear and concise and suggest a time in which you can connect with them again.
Reach Out
Someone successful in your field may seem completely unattainable to you but there is no harm in sending them an email or giving them a call. The worst that can happen is they don’t respond. The risk is so worth the reward of gaining a business contact that inspires you.
Networking ≠ Selling
The goal of networking should be to build relationships, not just to make a sale. With this in mind, incorporate these tips into your daily interactions with people and you’ll find yourself networking without even realizing it. Most importantly, be yourself; don’t sell yourself. Genuine interactions and passion will help you make valuable connections and expand your business.
